We hosted the first ever Irish #HealthChat in our Dublin offices this month, with political commentator, author and broadcaster, Roy Lilley speaking to Health Service Executive CIO and eHealth Ireland CEO, Richard Corbridge about his plans for digital modernisation in healthcare.

Richard explained how it has been an eventful, and at times, challenging year for digital health globally. Success in Ireland includes the first ‘digital baby’ delivered in Cork, the infrastructure to sequence the genome for epilepsy, patients assigned an Individual Health Identifier for the first time and the business case for a national electronic health record (EHR) being approved by the HSE.

Whilst much has already been done to digitally modernise healthcare, the most significant programme of work – the EHR – is yet to start explained Richard. The HSE is still awaiting approval of the business case and release of funding from Government. During the discussion with Roy, Richard stressed that procurement for the programme will need to start before the end of the year if it’s to succeed in delivering the projected benefits. He outlined how the time is needed to build and test the technology, and engage users, ready for the completion of the first ‘digital by default’ hospital in Dublin in 2022.

Richard also spoke about ensuring the security and protection of patient data as it moves around the system, the success of the  Lighthouse Projects, the mobilisation of healthcare services and patient empowerment.
